Kia ora [Name],

It’s 278 days until the election and I’m stoked to say we are gaining ground.

The latest Talbot Mills poll has us on 3.2%, up from 2% in November and the RNZ-Reid poll has on 2.3%, up 0.9%. It’s a long way to go, but we’re heading in the right direction and picking up speed.

Whether you are a long-time member or new to Opportunity - thank you for your support. There is a real sense of energy building and I hope you feel it too.

If you haven’t already, please consider joining as a member, donating what you can or signing up to volunteer. Every little bit counts.

Count me in!

Momentum in the media

With recent coverage in the Herald, Newsroom, Pacific Media Network and other outlets, we’re starting the year in a strong position. Right now, we’re building up our candidate team and national campaign crew - ahead of something special in late February. Watch this space!

Summer roadshow wrap up

The last couple of weeks marked the final leg of our summer roadshow, with visits to Tauranga, Hawke’s Bay, and New Plymouth. I had the chance to spend time with members and supporters, and to talk frankly with community leaders, businesses and conservationists about the issues facing their communities right now — from infrastructure and housing to environmental protection and local democracy.

Our time in Tauranga also coincided with the severe weather that caused the devastating slip at Mount Maunganui. What happened there is heartbreaking. My thoughts are with the families who have lost loved ones, and with everyone in the community who has been affected. I hope as politicians and community leaders we can do everything we can to prevent this from happening again in future.

Kicking off the political calendar at Rātana

I was honoured to attend Rātana for the first time and participate in the political powhiri. The message of kotahitanga and collective responsibility was strong. At a time when populism and division threatens to take hold in our country, Rātana was a reminder of a different way forward. I’ll also be at Waitangi next week, continuing those conversations about our shared future.

It really does feel like 2026 is our year team.

Until next time,

Qiulae.
