Update for February 5, 2026

Everyone welcome at Waitangi . . .

I’m at Waitangi again this year, one of my favourite events of the year. Did you know all New Zealanders are welcome at Waitangi?

The Waitangi Trust chair has extended an invitation to everyone who wants to join in marking the signing of our treaty, and the principles of partnership, participation and protection it guarantees.

. . . even politicians who attack Māori

Luxon might be returning to Waitangi this year but Kiwis will not forget the attacks on Māori by his Government.

This is the one week of the year when the Government pretends to care about Māori and the Treaty. Every other week has brought policies designed to undermine Māori.

Ironically, after undermining Māori all year, this week the Government has decided to praise marae for the shelter and manaakitanga offered during the recent storms.

The coalition has introduced policies that have setback Māori aspirations for equity in things like housing, healthcare, education and jobs but when it suits, they’ll offer praise.

Labour’s Māori caucus is a strong voice for Māori. We’ll continue to call out hypocrisy and when we show up to Waitangi to celebrate the treaty we mean it.

What’s really going on with the economy?

CTU economist Craig Renney unpacks the latest economic data and discusses National’s claim vs the reality of New Zealand’s economic situation on his Locked Out podcast.

Are you on the electoral roll?

It only takes a moment to make sure your details are correct with the Electoral Commission.

Your right to vote has come under attack by this Government - voters can no longer enrol on election day and must be enrolled two weeks before - so it’s critical that you check your details are correct, and if you move, update them.

Get your friends and family to check too - there have been reports of people disappearing from the electoral roll, especially the Māori roll.
