Speaking exclusively to The Spinoff, former Te Pāti Māori MP and independent member for Te Tai Tonga Tākuta Ferris confirmed he would be seeking reelection as an independent. Ferris was unsure whether Te Pāti Māori would stand a candidate in the electorate. He said the decision of the court case against the party – led by Te Tai Tokerau Mariameno Kapa-Kingi – would impact him “indirectly”. However, whatever the outcome of the case, Ferris confirmed he would not seek to return to Parliament under the party’s banner. Ferris won the seat by a majority of 2800 votes, or 10% at the 2023 general election.
It comes as Te Pāti Māori MP's Mariameno Kapa-Kingi and Tākuta Ferris enter a substantive hearing at the Wellington High Court after being expelled.
