As Chair of the Community Committee for the last six years I have been a strong supporter of the community sector including libraries, social housing and creating a welcoming community for all. Through my advocacy Council has committed to a fairer rating system and strengthened community services and facilities.
I’m a Resource Management Act commissioner, volunteer at the Esplanade Scenic Railway, and help resettle refugees in the community.
I have a veterinary science background and I make evidence-based decisions. I have demonstrated my ability to work collaboratively to achieve the best outcomes for the people of Palmerston North.
The future will be challenging, with cost-of-living pressures, government reforms and changes to planning regulations. We need experienced and sensible decision-makers at the Council table, to ensure our city is looked after and that our community is put first. Please re-elect me so I can continue to work for you.
"On Tuesday, King said he was disappointed the select committee did not recommend a change to entity D for the entire top of the south".
King said he was hugely disappointed but the work had to go on. “We are in the position now, given the stage of the project, where pressing on is pretty much the only option,” he said.
"We're not talking, you know, hundreds of millions of dollars in a number of these projects, particularly Motueka, you're talking less than 10 [million]. And it's just massively frustrating not to be able to get these projects over the line."
"Even focusing on the core services only will be immensely challenging," he said. "There's some things you do control and a whole lot of things that you don't including Government legislation and policy."
Mr King, who has been on the council since the dam was first mooted, said many people had spent years on a process that had gone nowhere. "I guess I'm massively disappointed and frustrated that at the end of the day it's become a very divisive debate over how it's funded. I accept it's the political reality but it's...gutting."
