Public health doctor Alex Hedley has been named as the Labour Party candidate for Napier next year’s general election. A former Napier Boys’ High School student of Ngāti Porou descent and with strong Wairoa links, Hedley’s selection was announced by the party on Monday. “Napier is my home,” he said.
Dr Alex Hedley, a public health specialist in training based in Napier, says it’s tough going trying to get health equity for Māori since the scrapping of Te Aka Whaiora – the Māori Health Authority. Speaking to Waatea in a personal capacity, Dr Hedley, who features in the online documentary series ‘I am a Doctor’, says many illnesses are preventable and that public health is a key vehicle for making critical changes.
Junior doctors at Hawke's Bay Hospital say they are striking for workers' rights, not pay. "The core issues behind the strike are rostering and the ability for our unions to have an input into the rosters that we do work," Hawke's Bay District Health Board-employed second-year house officer Dr Alex Hedley.
