Barring an admittedly quite precedented meltdown, Wayne Brown probably has the Auckland mayoralty in the bag. But the type of council he’ll lead will come down to the wire. Wayne Brown isn’t that interested in his own election race. Auckland’s incumbent mayor hasn’t bothered to turn up to most debates, preferring to let his rivals argue with a picture of his face.
As rivals trade barbs and controversies re-emerge, the abrasive mayor appears to be strolling to victory.
Auckland’s mayor has abandoned his small-target election strategy and pivoted to what political analysts are calling the ‘pissing everyone off approach’.
It looks like we might finally be letting people build houses in Kingsland, Mt Eden and Mt Albert, and some of our councillors are absolutely ropeable.
