Maungakiekie is a diverse, urban electorate located in south-central Auckland, anchored by the iconic landmark of Maungakiekie / One Tree Hill. It is a true microcosm of the city, blending established residential suburbs like Onehunga, Ellerslie, and One Tree Hill with the heavy industrial hubs of Penrose and Mount Wellington. The population is notably young and multicultural, with significant Māori, Pasifika, and Asian communities making it a "minority-majority" seat. Politically, Maungakiekie is often viewed as a bellwether electorate, frequently swinging between the major parties in line with the national mood. While it was held by Labour for much of the MMP era, it has become a fiercely contested battleground. The seat is currently held by National’s Greg Fleming, who won it in the 2023 general election, defeating the Labour incumbent. The 2025 boundary review resulted in minor boundary changes to Maungakiekie. This included reverting back to the 2020 electorate boundary between Epsom and Maungakiekie in Greenlane.
