Mt Maunganui Electorate Profile

Profile

Mt Maunganui is a rapidly growing coastal electorate that encompasses the iconic holiday destination of "The Mount" and the sprawling residential suburbs of Pāpāmoa and Welcome Bay. Defined by its relaxed beachside lifestyle and significant port-related industry, the area attracts a mix of retirees, young families, and professionals. The demographic profile is predominantly Pakeha with higher-than-average home ownership rates, although rapid population growth has placed increasing pressure on local infrastructure and housing. Politically, the area is a staunch fortress for the National Party, reflecting its conservative, affluent, and entrepreneurial voter base. It is the successor to the Bay of Plenty electorate, which has been held by National continuously since its re-establishment in 1996. The seat is currently represented by Tom Rutherford, who was first elected as the MP for Bay of Plenty in 2023. In the 2025 boundary review the Bay of Plenty electorate gained Mt Maunganui, and was renamed after the area.
