Mt Roskill is a vibrant, urban electorate on the western side of the Auckland isthmus, bordering the Manukau Harbour. Anchored by suburbs such as Three Kings, Hillsborough, and Mt Roskill itself, the area is defined by its working-class roots and immense cultural diversity. It is one of New Zealand’s most multi-ethnic seats, home to the country's highest proportion of Asian residents and a significant Pasifika community, creating a rich tapestry of local markets, festivals, and religious diversity. Politically, the electorate was long considered a Labour Party stronghold, famously held by former party leader Phil Goff for nearly two decades. However, the 2023 general election delivered a historic result when National’s Carlos Cheung defeated the Labour incumbent, Michael Wood, ending Labour's dominance in the seat. This shift has redefined Mt Roskill as a competitive battleground rather than a safe seat, reflecting the changing political allegiances of its diverse immigrant communities. The 2025 boundary review resulted in minor boundary changes to Mt Roskill.
