Napier Electorate Profile

Profile

Napier is a provincial electorate on the east coast of the North Island, centred on the Art Deco city of Napier but extending into the surrounding rural hinterland. The area is defined by its strong primary industries, particularly horticulture, viticulture, and forestry, which are supported by the Port of Napier, a critical economic gateway for the Hawke's Bay region. It is a popular tourist destination known for its sunny climate and heritage architecture, attracting a mix of retirees, families, and seasonal workers. Politically, Napier has historically been regarded as a Labour stronghold, having been held by the party for much of the last century. However, it has become increasingly competitive in recent decades, swinging to the National Party during periods of strong centre-right support. The seat is currently held by National’s Katie Nimon, who reclaimed it in the 2023 general election following the retirement of long-serving Labour MP Stuart Nash. In the 2025 boundary review the Napier electorate gained a rural area north of the Ngaruroro River from the Tukituki electorate.
