New Plymouth is a provincial electorate located on the west coast of the North Island, centred on the city of New Plymouth and the surrounding towns of Bell Block, Ōakura, and Waitara. The region is often referred to as the country's "energy province" due to its rich history in oil and gas exploration, though its economy is now increasingly driven by high-value dairy farming and specialised engineering and manufacturing. The electorate enjoys a high GDP per capita and a strong lifestyle appeal, characterised by the dramatic backdrop of Mount Taranaki and a vibrant arts and coastal culture. Politically, New Plymouth has historically been a bellwether seat that often votes with the government of the day. It was held by Labour’s Harry Duynhoven for fifteen years and briefly by Glen Bennett during the 2020 Labour landslide. However, it returned to its more traditional conservative leanings in 2023, when National’s David MacLeod won the seat with a comfortable majority, reflecting the area's rural and business-focused interests. In the 2025 boundary review the New Plymouth electorate extended so more of Waitara is included within its boundary, rather than being shared with Taranaki-King Country.
