Northland is a vast, predominantly rural electorate covering the northernmost tip of New Zealand, stretching from the Cape Reinga lighthouse down to the Kaipara Harbour. It is a region of contrasts, known for its stunning twin coastlines, subtropical climate, and significant primary industries, particularly forestry, dairy farming, and horticulture. Politically, Northland has traditionally been a National Party stronghold, though it has a history of occasional rebellion. It famously fell to New Zealand First leader Winston Peters in a 2015 by-election and swung to Labour during the 2020 "red wave." However, normal service resumed in the 2023 general election when National’s Grant McCallum reclaimed the seat with a comfortable majority, defeating the Labour incumbent Willow-Jean Prime. In the 2025 boundary review the Northland electorate lost some areas to the Whangārei electorate.
