Remutaka Electorate Profile

Profile

Remutaka is an outer-urban and semi-rural electorate located at the head of the Hutt Valley, northeast of Wellington. Centered on the city of Upper Hutt, it also includes the northern Lower Hutt suburbs of Stokes Valley, Avalon, and Naenae. The area is defined by its proximity to the Remutaka Range and the Hutt River, offering a lifestyle that blends affordable family housing with easy access to outdoor recreation. It has a strong commuter culture, with a high proportion of residents traveling by train to Wellington City for work, particularly in the public sector. Politically, the seat is a fortress for the Labour Party and has been held by them since the introduction of MMP. It is currently represented by the Leader of the Opposition and former Prime Minister, Chris Hipkins, who has held the seat since 2008. The electorate is widely considered one of Labour’s safest, consistently returning Hipkins with substantial majorities even during challenging election cycles for the party. In the 2025 boundary review the Remutaka electorate shifted south-westwards.
