Rotorua is a provincial electorate in the Bay of Plenty, famous globally as New Zealand’s premier tourism and geothermal hub. Centred on Rotorua city and its surrounding lakes, the area is defined by its unique landscape of geysers, mud pools, and extensive forestry plantations. The local economy is heavily reliant on tourism, hospitality, and wood processing, while the community has a rich cultural identity with one of the highest proportions of Māori residents in a general electorate, anchoring the region’s strong Te Arawa heritage. Politically, Rotorua was once considered a classic bellwether seat, often determining the government of the day. However, since 2008, it has become a stronghold for the National Party under the tenure of senior MP Todd McClay. Despite a strong Labour party vote during the 2020 "red wave," the electorate returned decisively to National in 2023, with McClay securing a comfortable majority that reaffirmed the area's centre-right leaning in recent cycles. In the 2025 boundary review Rotorua shifted northwards to gain required population.
