Selwyn is a rapidly expanding electorate located on the Canterbury Plains, immediately south and west of Christchurch. It is a mix of rich agricultural land and booming satellite towns, most notably Rolleston, Lincoln, and Darfield. The area is defined by its explosive population growth which has transformed it from a purely rural stronghold into a peri-urban hub for young families and commuters. The local economy remains heavily anchored in primary production, particularly dairy farming and cropping, alongside significant construction and service industries supporting its new housing developments. Politically, Selwyn is one of the safest seats for the National Party in New Zealand. Its voter base is largely conservative, prosperous, and business-oriented, reliably delivering some of the party’s highest margins. The electorate is currently represented by Nicola Grigg, who has held the seat since 2020 following the retirement of former senior Minister Amy Adams. Selwyn’s population is growing fast and as a result the communities of Templeton and Prebbleton were moved into Wigram at the 2025 boundary review.
