Taieri is a diverse electorate that blends the southern suburbs of Dunedin with a vast rural hinterland in South Otago. Geographically, it stretches from the urban density of South Dunedin and the swiftly growing satellite town of Mosgiel down to the Clutha District, encompassing the service towns of Milton and Balclutha. This unique mix creates a "town and country" character, where heavy industry, such as the Tiwai Point aluminium smelter support services and local manufacturing, sits alongside sheep, beef, and dairy farming. Politically, the seat is a Labour Party stronghold, inheriting the legacy of the former Dunedin South electorate. It has been held by Labour since its re-naming in 2020, with the party traditionally performing well in the working-class suburbs of South Dunedin and the larger towns. The seat is currently represented by Ingrid Leary, who won comfortably in 2020 and retained the seat in 2023, resisting the strong swing to National seen in the surrounding rural electorates. In the 2025 boundary review the Taieri electorate’s boundaries were unchanged from the 2020 review.
