Tāmaki Electorate Profile

Profile

Tāmaki is an affluent, urban electorate located on the eastern coastline of the Auckland isthmus, famous for its golden beaches and views of Rangitoto Island. Anchored by the wealthy suburbs of Mission Bay, St Heliers, and Kohimarama, it also includes the rapidly developing areas of Stonefields and Glen Innes. The electorate is characterised by high property values and a population of professionals and business owners, making it one of the country's most socio-economically advantaged areas. Politically, Tāmaki is a fortress for the centre-right, having been held by the National Party for nearly all of its history, including the tenure of former Prime Minister Sir Robert Muldoon. However, the 2023 general election delivered a stunning upset when ACT’s Brooke van Velden defeated the long-serving National incumbent Simon O’Connor. Despite this electorate seat change, the party vote remained overwhelmingly loyal to National, reinforcing the area's status as a conservative heartland. The 2025 boundary review resulted in very minor boundary changes.
