Taranaki-King Country Electorate Profile

Profile

Taranaki-King Country is a vast, predominantly rural electorate that spans the western side of the North Island, linking the southern Waikato with the Taranaki region. Anchored by key service towns such as Te Awamutu, Te Kuiti, and Stratford, the area is defined by its rugged landscape and powerhouse agricultural economy. It is a heartland for New Zealand’s dairy and drystock farming industries, while also holding significant cultural importance as the home of the Kīngitanga movement. Politically, the electorate is an impregnable stronghold for the National Party, reflecting its conservative rural demographic. It has been held by National continuously since its formation in 1996, serving as a reliable bank of votes for the centre-right. The seat is currently represented by Barbara Kuriger, who has held it since 2014 and consistently secures large majorities. In the 2025 boundary review the Taranaki-King Country electorate gained Taumarunui from the Rangitīkei electorate.
