Te Tai Tokerau Electorate Profile

Profile

Te Tai Tokerau is the country's northernmost Māori electorate, stretching from the tip of Cape Reinga down to the northern and western fringes of Auckland. It is a seat of immense cultural significance, encompassing the heartland of the Ngāpuhi iwi—the largest in New Zealand—as well as Te Aupōuri, Ngāti Kuri, and Te Rarawa in the Far North, and parts of Ngāti Whātua in the south. The electorate is geographically diverse, linking isolated rural communities in the Hokianga and Bay of Islands with the urban Māori populations of Whangārei and West Auckland. Politically, the seat has a history of high-stakes contests and independent-minded representation. It was the stronghold of veteran MPs such as Tau Henare, Dover Samuels, and the Mana Party’s Hone Harawira, before being held by Labour’s Deputy Leader Kelvin Davis for nearly a decade. The 2023 general election delivered a major upset when Mariameno Kapa-Kingi (Te Pāti Māori) defeated Davis, ending Labour's grip on the seat. However, the electorate remains politically volatile; in late 2025, Kapa-Kingi was expelled from Te Pāti Māori, leaving the seat represented by an Independent MP and fueling significant local uncertainty. In the 2025 boundary review the Te Tai Tokerau electorate’s boundaries were unchanged from the 2020 review.
