Tukituki Electorate Profile

Profile

Tukituki is a diverse provincial electorate in Hawke's Bay, centered on the twin hubs of Hastings and Havelock North. The region is often known as the "fruit bowl of New Zealand," defined by its fertile plains that support a massive horticulture and viticulture industry, including world-renowned wineries and orchards. The electorate encompasses a stark contrast in demographics, ranging from the affluent, leafy streets of Havelock North to the working-class and multicultural communities of Hastings and Flaxmere, all of which are still navigating the long-term recovery from Cyclone Gabrielle. Politically, Tukituki is a competitive seat that often swings with the national mood, though it has leaned towards the National Party for much of the last two decades. It was held by Labour for a single term from 2020 but returned to National in the 2023 general election. The seat is currently represented by Catherine Wedd, a former horticulture executive who won with a decisive majority, highlighting the region's focus on primary industry support and economic recovery. In the 2025 boundary review the Tukituki electorate lost a rural area north of the Ngaruroro River to the Napier electorate.
