Upper Harbour Electorate Profile

Profile

Upper Harbour is a rapidly developing electorate that bridges West Auckland and the North Shore, spanning the upper reaches of the Waitematā Harbour. It encompasses a mix of established suburbs like Glenfield and Greenhithe, alongside booming growth areas such as Hobsonville Point and West Harbour. The electorate is defined by its coastal geography and recent urban intensification, attracting a diverse population of young families and professionals. It is culturally distinct, with a very high proportion of Asian residents and a strong rate of home ownership compared to the wider city. Politically, Upper Harbour leans towards the National Party, reflecting its suburban and aspirational demographic. However, it is not immune to national swings. While it was held by former Deputy Prime Minister Paula Bennett for years, it fell to Labour during the 2020 election landslide. Normal service resumed in 2023 when National’s Cameron Brewer reclaimed the seat with a substantial majority, defeating the Labour incumbent Vanushi Walters. In the 2025 boundary review the fast-growing Upper Harbour electorate expanded north into Whenuapai and Unsworth Heights.
