Waimakariri Electorate Profile

Profile

Waimakariri is a rapidly growing peri-urban electorate located immediately north of Christchurch, separated from the city by the braided river that shares its name. Anchored by the major satellite towns of Rangiora and Kaiapoi, the area functions as a significant commuter belt for Christchurch while retaining a distinct rural character further inland around Oxford and Cust. The local economy is driven by primary industries, particularly dairy farming and forestry, alongside a booming construction and retail sector supporting the influx of families post-Canterbury earthquakes. Politically, the seat is traditionally a National Party stronghold, though it has a history of being competitive during strong Labour cycles. It was held by Labour in the early 2000s and saw a very close contest in 2020. However, the electorate returned firmly to its conservative roots in the 2023 general election, with incumbent National MP Matt Doocey who has held the seat since 2014. In the 2025 boundary review the Waimakariri electorate’s boundaries were unchanged from the 2020 review.
