Wellington Bays Electorate Profile

Profile

Wellington Bays is a progressive, urban electorate that wraps around the southern and eastern coastline of the capital. It is a diverse mix of communities, ranging from the rugged South Coast bays of Island Bay and Ōwhiro Bay to the flatter, working-class roots of Kilbirnie and Miramar on the peninsula. The area is dominated by key infrastructure like Wellington International Airport, but also features significant creative industries, including the famous Weta Workshop. The addition of inner-city suburbs has reinforced its character as a hub for students, renters, and public sector professionals. Politically, the area is one of the most left-leaning in the country, having transitioned from a safe Labour seat to a fierce Green-Labour battleground. The former Rongotai seat was a Labour fortress for decades under Annette King and Paul Eagle, but the 2023 general election saw a historic shift when Green Party co-leader Julie Anne Genter won the seat. The electorate is now a stronghold for progressive politics, with the Green Party and Labour competing for dominance while the centre-right vote remains comparatively small. In the 2025 boundary review the old Rongotai electorate was renamed Wellington Bays expanded westwards, taking in the suburbs of Brooklyn and Mt Cook from the old Wellington Central electorate.
