Wellington North is a newly reconfigured electorate that encompasses the heart of the capital city and its northern suburbs. It functions as the political and administrative engine room of New Zealand, containing Parliament, the Beehive, and the head offices of most government departments in Thorndon and the CBD. The seat spans from the high-density, student-heavy (Victoria University) and young professional areas of Kelburn and Te Aro, northwards into the affluent, family-oriented suburbs of Wadestown, Khandallah, and Broadmeadows. Politically, this area has long been one of the most progressive in the country, with the former Wellington Central seat being a fortress for Labour and the Greens. In a historic shift, Green Party candidate Tamatha Paul won the seat in 2023. However, the new boundaries present a unique challenge for the incumbent; losing the deep-green bastions of Brooklyn and Mt Cook while gaining the traditionally more conservative, National-leaning northern suburbs creates a fascinating new political dynamic for the electorate. In the 2025 boundary review the old Wellington Central electorate was renamed Wellington North moved north into the old Ōhāriu electorate as far as Khandallah and Broadmeadows, while losing the suburbs of Brooklyn and Mt Cook to the new Wellington Bays electorate.
