Whanganui is a historic provincial electorate centred on the "River City" of Whanganui, extending up the majestic Whanganui River and into the surrounding rural hinterland of South Taranaki. The area is defined by its rich heritage, arts culture, and deep connection to the river, which is legally recognised as a living entity. Economically, it relies on a mix of manufacturing, forestry, and agriculture, while serving as a key service hub for the wider region. The demographic profile is older than the national average, with a significant Māori population and a strong community spirit often centred around local marae and heritage institutions. Politically, Whanganui has traditionally been viewed as a bellwether seat, often swinging to align with the government of the day. It has a history of close contests and has been held by both major parties in recent decades. After a term with Labour during the 2020 landslide, the seat returned to the National Party in the 2023 general election, with local businessman Carl Bates defeating the Labour incumbent Steph Lewis to reclaim the electorate for the centre-right. In the 2025 boundary review the Whanganui electorate expanded to the northeast.
