Whangaparāoa Electorate Profile

Profile

Whangaparāoa is a distinctive coastal electorate situated on the Hibiscus Coast, immediately north of the Auckland metropolis. Anchored by the Whangaparāoa Peninsula and the bustling seaside town of Orewa, it also includes the rapidly expanding residential hubs of Silverdale and Millwater. The area is defined by its relaxed, beach-oriented lifestyle, attracting a mix of retirees and an increasing number of young families who commute into Auckland via the Northern Motorway or the Gulf Harbour ferry. Politically, the seat is a fortress for the National Party, reflecting its affluent, conservative, and older demographic. It has been held by National since its formation and is currently represented by senior MP and Cabinet Minister Mark Mitchell, who has held the seat (and its predecessor, Rodney) since 2011. While the area has seen rapid population growth, its voting patterns remain remarkably consistent, reliably delivering large majorities for the centre-right. In the 2025 boundary review the Whangaparāoa electorate lost a small area south of Coatesville, which moved into Kaipara ki Mahurangi.
