Wigram Electorate Profile

Profile

Wigram is a rapidly developing suburban electorate in south-west Christchurch, defined by its mix of industrial heritage and modern residential expansion. Anchored by the major manufacturing and retail hub of Hornby, it encompasses the historic Wigram airbase, now transformed into the master-planned Wigram Skies community, and established suburbs like Spreydon and Hillmorton. The electorate has a diverse demographic profile, with a significant manufacturing workforce in the west and a growing population of young families and professionals in its new housing subdivisions. Politically, Wigram has long been a fortress for the left, serving as the power base for Jim Anderton for decades before transitioning to the Labour Party. It is currently represented by senior Labour MP Megan Woods, who has held the seat since 2011. However, the electorate is becoming increasingly competitive as its boundaries expand into the city's semi-rural fringe, bringing in more conservative-leaning voters from the Selwyn District. The communities of Templeton and Prebbleton were moved into Wigram from Selwyn at the 2025 boundary review.
