The battle lines have been drawn
There is just so much at stake as we head into this year’s election campaign. If re-elected, the National Party will sell off valuable state assets like our energy companies, Air New Zealand, and the coal mines. ACC will be carved up and handed over to the private Australian insurance industry, the rights of employees in the workplace will be eroded away even further, and public services cut to the bone.
It doesn’t have to be this way. Labour has announced a series of bold policies that will ensure that as Kiwis we can own our own future. We will make sure everyone pays their fair share of tax, we’ll give families struggling with the rising cost of living some much needed financial relief, and we’ll keep our valuable state assets in Kiwi hands.
Under Labour, some of our lowest income families will get up to $100 a week of extra cash in their hands as a result of our plans to take GST off fresh fruit and veges, lift the minimum wage to $15 an hour, and allow people to keep the first $100 a week they earn free of tax.
With your help, we can win this election. While the National Party and their hired mouthpieces would like to convince you the election is all but over, we’ll be fighting right down to the wire. We can’t afford not to. I look forward to seeing you all on the hustings!
Chris Hipkins, MP for Rimutaka
We had a fun night at the Hapai Club with our multi-cultural dinner recently. Those who attended brought along their traditional cultural dishes and a few even wore their traditional cultural dress. Thanks to those who came and joined in on the festivities.
Can you give a little of your labour for Labour?
It’s an election year, and we need all hands to the pump if we’re going to ensure a Labour-led government is elected on November the 26th. Our local campaign is really starting to pick up the pace, but there is still a heck of a lot that needs to be done. Can you help us out?
There are a few key jobs in need of volunteers:
Database updating: We’ve got an excellent database of every voter living in Rimutaka, based in Electoral Roll data. However many of the phone numbers in the database are out of date or non-existent. We need a couple of people with access to a computer and the internet to give us a few hours to help update phone number data. It’s an easy job and can be done from home in your spare time. We will provide you with a login to the database, all you will need is a computer and a copy of the phone book.
Telephone canvassing: Each weekend we’re out and about knocking on doors. We’re getting a great response, but a lot of people aren’t home. To make sure we talk to as many people as possible, we’re keen to get people ringing the people who weren’t home when we called. You can do this in the evenings from home. We will provide you with a booklet of people to call and a script you can work through. All you need to do is make the phone calls.
Leaflet deliveries: We’ll have several more mailbox drops to do during the campaign and the more volunteers we have, the less each person has to do. There are still a few gaps in the system, and there are some areas we’d like to split in half to lighten the load. A few more volunteers would make a huge difference.
If you’re happy to help with any of the above jobs, contact Todd Valster, George Collins, or Ginny Andersen.
Su’a William Sio in Rimutaka
When Su’a William Sio, Labour MP for Mangare, visited Rimutaka recently we went to Precision Industries, an office furniture manufacturer in Wingate. Precision employees and employers spared some of their time to talk with us about their business. It’s always great to see local businesses that are thriving despite the current economic climate.
We also visited the Early Childhood Education Centre Fetu Aoo Pomare Aoga Amata. The visit was fun and timely, given the ongoing controversy over the funding of Early Childhood Educators.
Early Childhood Education is something that New Zealand should not compromise on. It is a vital part of our kids’ development and vital to the positive future of our country. Slashing funding for ECEs compromises New Zealand’s future.
