NZ GOING BACKWARD UNDER NATIONAL

Bill English’s shocking claim that it is an advantage for Kiwi workers to be paid 30% less than Australians shows just how far out of touch he is.

Many New Zealanders are struggling to pay their bills because their wages aren’t rising. The cost of living is skyrocketing with prices for everyday basics like petrol, power, food and milk putting pressure on families. Many Kiwi workers are heading across the ditch to Australia looking for better paying jobs.

When National came to power, it promised to close the wage gap to encourage our workers to stay at home. But John Key and Bill English have not only thrown in the towel on that promise, they’ve even gone as far as suggesting we’re better off being a low wage economy! Explain that to the Kiwi workers who are grafting hard every day and taking home barely enough money to survive on. They won’t thank National for that attitude.

The statement is an indictment on this Government and its failure to grow our economy. National stands for a low wage economy and it is taking this country backwards.

Labour stands for a high-skill, high-wage, high-tech economy, where we invest in research and development and trade training. We can either be the cheapest or we can be the best.

I want to lead a country where we are the best.

LABOUR LIST CONFIRMED

The process of putting together the list rankings is always a difficult job. We had a wealth of talented people to choose from in terms of candidates for the upcoming election.

There was a lot of robust debate but I think the moderating committee has done an excellent job of selecting a list that reflects the diversity of the country we live in.

We have ended up with a list of highly qualified, experienced candidates that represent all communities.

I’m looking forward to working alongside all the candidates in the lead-up to November 26 and welcoming many of them to our Labour team in Parliament after the election.

BMW SAGA CONTINUES

John Key has been wriggling like a fish on a hook over the BMW saga. He’s been busy telling New Zealanders that they can’t afford things that are “nice to have” – that we all have to tighten our belts in these tough economic times.

Yet apparently, he’s happy to spend millions of taxpayer dollars on 34 brand new BMWs that have all the “nice to have” trimmings, like heated seats and mobile offices. He’s approved spending on the limos at a time when the economy has stalled and families are struggling to pay their bills.

Hundreds of families in Christchurch will have to spend winter in cabins and campervans – a heated seat or two there wouldn’t go amiss! While John Key prepared to spend money on luxuries for him and his ministers, he now claims he won’t even ride in the BMW in Dunedin that has the heated seat.

I’ll be interested to see whether he stands by that comment when he next heads down south.

In short
-----------------------------------------------------------------
WELCOME TO LOUISA WALL
The Labour caucus has welcomed our newest MP Louisa Wall to
Parliament this week. Louisa is a bright, energetic, talented
young Māori woman who will be a welcome addition to our caucus.
She has already performed as a star on the sports field, having
represented New Zealand as a netball and rugby international. I'm
sure she will bring the same fierce determination and dedication
to her new role as a Labour MP. I look forward to working with
Louisa.
REGIONAL VISIT - HAMILTON
I was in Hamilton last week with Sue Moroney for a catch-up with
locals. Sue had planned a busy day for us both - you can read
more about my visit here [http://www.facebook.com/note.php]
Over the next couple of weeks I'm planning to visit Christchurch,
Napier & New Plymouth. If you have ideas of people, businesses
or organisations I should meet with, please email me here
