KiwiRail business and livery launched

On Tuesday morning I launched the new KiwiRail business and took the wraps off the first locomotive decked out in the new KiwiRail livery.

Now that both the tracks and the business are back in New Zealand ownership we can begin revitalising the system to fulfill its potential as an efficient provider of sustainable freight and passenger transport.

Rail - an investment in a sustainable future

In the 21st century our rail system needs major investment so that it can play a growing role in our transport system.

With growing worldwide awareness of climate change and the need for our country to be more sustainable, and with the price of a barrel of oil reaching an historic US$142, many nations are looking at rail as a central component of their economic infrastructure – and so must New Zealand.

• Linda Constable,
• Ross Martin

Recommendations on the structure and management of the rail businesses will be considered by Cabinet following a report from a Rail Development Group in August.

KiwiRail - proudly back in New Zealand ownership
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday 1 July was a proud day for the railway system in New
Zealand because that was when our country's rail and ferry
services were transferred back into government ownership.
This special Labour Leader links to photographs of the event at
which I launched KiwiRail, and photographs of the first
locomotive painted in KiwiRail livery.
