Balancing tax relief with investment in the future

Just over a month ago the Labour-led government announced a programme of tax relief beginning on 1 October this year, with further reductions in 2010 and 2011.

I’m pleased that during this year of slower economic growth we are able to give tax relief and still maintain government spending in critical areas like health, education and new infrastructure.

I believe that by balancing tax relief with investment in critical public services, we will keep our communities strong while helping families balance their budgets.

This kind of long-term approach to investing in services, like primary health care, is starting to pay off. In recent weeks several studies have shown that health outcomes for New Zealanders are improving while primary health care costs have dropped.

I believe the choices we made in the Budget are the best for New Zealand in what are challenging times internationally. We’re not going to mortgage our country’s future and we’re not going to cut services. Instead we will keep our focus on our vision of building strong communities, strong families, a strong economy, and a strong nation.

Central North Island Treaty deal a major step forward

Yesterday the Crown and Central North Island Iwi signed the largest Treaty of Waitangi Settlement agreement to date. The signing of this agreement is a major step forward for all New Zealanders.

Survey shows New Zealanders are healthier

With our public health services starved of the investment they needed, and with living standards stalled during the 1990s, health outcomes for many New Zealanders worsened. Recent results from the largest-ever survey of New Zealanders' health, however, show that most people now believe they are in good health and have excellent access to health care services.

How we made Budget decisions

Making choices about how we invest in New Zealand’s future is central to what we do in government. Last week Michael Cullen released Treasury documents relating to the Budget. They show how we worked to balance tax relief with continued long-term investment in public services and infrastructure.

Smoking rate falls to record low

I recently announced that the number of New Zealanders who smoke has fallen to its lowest ever level since monitoring of tobacco use began more than thirty years ago. The new low of 19.9 per cent for current smokers aged 15 years and over is great news, and we need to keep improving on these encouraging results.
