New Zealanders clearly support a temporary levy to help pay for rebuilding Christchurch.

Even in these tough financial times 57% of Kiwis support a levy according to a UMR poll. They also prefer a temporary levy (40%) ahead of deep cuts to Government spending (29%) or more Government debt (22%).

Many economists and political commentators are also in favour.

In the face of this widespread support, the Government's resistance to a sensible idea looks increasingly silly.
