Greenweek - 7 April 2010 Email news from the Green MPs ----------------------------- Kia ora [Name] Every New Zealander should get a fair go and so it's alarming to hear the Government blaming beneficiaries for being out of work when there are no jobs, or for being on an invalid's benefit when they may have a condition like cerebral palsy that severely limits their ability to work. You can help stop the blame game when the topic of welfare and benefits comes up with friends, family or workmates. You can remind them that the large majority of NZers on benefits genuinely need help, despite the Government's focus on the few exceptions. And you can point out that it's hard to live on a benefit - $160 a week doesn't go very far - so most New Zealanders use the help when they absolutely need it and move on when they can. Blame is the easy thing to do, but we'll be better off as a country if we talk calmly about what the welfare system actually does, why we need it and how we can reduce that need, so please help stop the blame game and start the really important conversation. Our Government wants to remove protection from National Parks and World Heritage Sites in order to start mining operations. These mines will destroy pristine wilderness and devastate our clean, green image, the basis of our $21 billion dollar tourism industry. http://my.greens.org.nz/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php View all videos http://my.greens.org.nz/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php This week's podcast ------------------- Betting the Superfund against Climate Change Green Co-leader Russel Norman talks about a couple of unusual recent investment decisions from the Superfund - decisions that seem, on the face of it, to bet against climate change and peak oil. http://my.greens.org.nz/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php View all podcasts http://my.greens.org.nz/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php News ----------- Labour, Greens and Grey Power to investigate state of aged care 7 April 2010 Labour and the Greens are to work alongside Grey Power to hold a nationwide investigation into the state of aged care, the parties announced today. http://my.greens.org.nz/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php Mokihinui decision disastrous 6 April 2010 The decision to grant resource consent for an 85m hydro dam on the Mokihinui River is the wrong one, the Green Party said today. http://my.greens.org.nz/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php Whaling countries mock IWC compromise 6 April 2010 Pro-whaling countries have hiked up their whaling quotas in an attempt to skew the negotiations at the upcoming IWC meeting, and are manipulating New Zealand's negotiating position, the Green Party said today. http://my.greens.org.nz/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php View all news http://my.greens.org.nz/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php Blog posts ----------- Inequality in Aotearoa: a brief history of inequality - by Metiria Turei "For over 90 per cent of our existence as human beings we lived, almost exclusively, in highly egalitarian societies." - from The Spirit Level by Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett In the case of New Zealand, it has only been quite recently -- the 1990s in particular -- where inequality has emerged as a defining feature of our social landscape. http://my.greens.org.nz/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php View all blog posts http://my.greens.org.nz/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php Events ------ "Our Water - Our Vote" - Christchurch Public Meeting with Green MPs Sue Kedgley and Russel Norman http://my.greens.org.nz/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php Our democratic rights and local control have been removed by the Government.
