Every New Zealander should get a fair go and so it's alarming to hear the Government blaming beneficiaries for being out of work when there are no jobs, or for being on an invalid's benefit when they may have a condition like cerebral palsy that severely limits their ability to work.

You can help stop the blame game when the topic of welfare and benefits comes up with friends, family or workmates. You can remind them that the large majority of NZers on benefits genuinely need help, despite the Government's focus on the few exceptions. And you can point out that it's hard to live on a benefit - $160 a week doesn't go very far - so most New Zealanders use the help when they absolutely need it and move on when they can.

Blame is the easy thing to do, but we'll be better off as a country if we talk calmly about what the welfare system actually does, why we need it and how we can reduce that need, so please help stop the blame game and start the really important conversation.

In the case of New Zealand, it has only been quite recently -- the 1990s in particular -- where inequality has emerged as a defining feature of our social landscape.
