Update for July 16, 2025

Bagshaws sound the alarm

Respected Christchurch doctors Phil and Sue Bagshaw are worried 10-year contracts in health will further downgrade the public system, seeing a flow of not only money away from the public sector, but also a drop in training - as they point out, the public sector is where specialised training happens.

As our Health spokesperson Ayesha Verrall says, such long contracts will lock in private provision and will not just be a stopgap to clear backlogs. You can watch the interview below for a good explanation of why this is worrying for anybody who cares about maintaining our public health system.

Papanui High School

It was an early but really moving start on Monday morning when Papanui High School unveiled their new whakairo taonga in the Johns Wing. Thanks to principal Robert Gilbert for the invitation to this special event.

Paranormal happenings

When the team from Paddy Gower Has Issues reached out to see if I’d be involved in an episode, I couldn’t say no - and we had a great time with interviewer Karen O’Leary of Wellington Paranormal fame.

I’ll let you know when the episode is due to air - stay tuned.

Youth unemployment

I’ve invited our Youth spokesperson Arena Williams to Christchurch in August to meet with both rangatahi and organisations supporting them. It’s been clear for some time that the Luxon Government is waging war on young people and this recent article in the Press confirms what we were already seeing - they’re bearing the brunt of the lack of jobs.

This week’s announcements about polytechnics will see even more job losses and less training for young people in the regions - you can read Labour’s statement on this disaster here.

Decent work that pays the bills should be the right of every Kiwi. Good Government partners with business to create jobs and boost industry so we can create high-quality jobs and our young people can build a life here at home - not get on the next plane to Australia.

I’d love to hear from you about what you want New Zealand to look like for our children and grandchildren. Feel free to email me your thoughts.

Ngā mihi,

Duncan
