** Update for July 29, 2025 ------------------------------------------------------------ ** National is making it harder to vote ------------------------------------------------------------ In 2023 special votes included over 97,000 people who registered for the first time during the voting period. Nearly 134,000 changed their address in the same period. Many of those people will be unable to vote under the proposed changes which stop enrolment in the voting period and on election day. People get busy and are forgetful. Things crop up that distract us from life admin. Not everyone is thinking about the election and the obligation to update their enrolment until the election is looming. We all want to know the result of the election as soon as possible - but democracy means everyone should have a say. I think that is worth waiting a few more days for. ** Kiwis are not dropkicks ------------------------------------------------------------ Deputy Prime Minister David Seymour referred to Kiwis who enrol or update their details at the last minute as “dropkicks”. Is this the standard you expect from your elected representatives? People who enrol or update their details last minute could do so for any number of reasons. Lots of people move often, especially renters and young people. A huge number of people update their address details when they move but forget about the Electoral Commission until reminded when election year rolls around. Some just plain forget - like they forget about their rego being due. Kiwis with busy lives aren’t dropkicks, they’re human and it’s disgraceful that one of the leaders of our country could refer to a large contingent of citizens like that. You can update your details or enrol online - use the button below. Enrol or update here (https://vote.nz/enrolling/enrol-or-update/enrol-or-update-online/) ** Chris Hipkins on the tail wagging the dog ------------------------------------------------------------ Opposition leader Chris Hipkins spoke to the Herald’s podcast The Front Page this week. The Herald is behind a paywall so if you can’t access it, you can watch the Big Hairy News discussion of it here - the discussion starts at 1:31 so you might want to fast forward. If you have a Herald subscription the link is in the button below. As Chris has said, under this coalition many things have been thrust upon New Zealand that it didn’t vote for. Minor parties are calling the shots and Luxon is letting them - the tail wagging the dog. https://www.youtube.com/watch Watch podcast (https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/labours-chris-hipkins-questions-mmp-system-seeks-balance-in-power-the-front-page/CJEFL6KWZ5CVNEUP3VR3WC5LXM/) ** In the news ------------------------------------------------------------ The construction industry is in crisis under National, with 18,000 jobs gone since 2023. ** More → (https://www.labour.org.nz/news/release-construction-workforce-crisis-under-national/) ------------------------------------------------------------ Revelations about tobacco industry lobbying shows the tobacco industry has walked all over the Government. ** Details → (https://www.labour.org.nz/news/release-lobbying-docs-show-govt-s-weakness/) ------------------------------------------------------------ ** For your diary this weekend ------------------------------------------------------------ * Family History Expo - Turanga (https://www.facebook.com/events/1975087119563018/) * Roll Call: A Survey of Otautahi Artists - The Welder (https://www.facebook.com/events/4056237117980788/4056237131314120/) * Otautahi Girls’ Choir mid-winter concert - St Albans Community Centre (https://www.facebook.com/events/2519556015070717/) * Orton Bradley Park planting day (https://www.facebook.com/events/704195535713995/) * Polar Plunge - support Special Olympics NZ!
