Update for August 13, 2025

Our young people deserve better

I invited Opposition spokesperson for youth, Arena Williams, to Christchurch recently to speak with young people - and the organisations that support them -about how hard this Government is making life for our rangatahi.

We visited Te Tahi Youth to talk about the challenges facing young people in employment. You can read more about their work and how hard it is for youth out there in this piece from the Press (it’s paywalled, sorry). You can also see what our Finance and Economy spokesperson Barbara Edmonds has said here.

There are 10,000 young people out of work in Canterbury. This Government is making life harder and harder for everyone, but our young people are finding it extra tough, and they take longer to recover after a job loss. No wonder Kiwis are heading to Australia in record numbers.

Arena also met with young people to talk about the things that are worrying them like jobs, health and homes.

Here’s Arena and I with Te Tahi’s employment team.

Hear from my Youth MP

As the Youth Parliament 2025 draws to a close I caught up with my Youth MP Hineātea Alexander. Youth Parliament this year was overshadowed by a poorly thought out attempt to censor youth MPs - she didn’t get a chance to have her say in Parliament so I’m giving her that opportunity.

For whom the road tolls

Waimakariri residents - along with regular users of SH1 travelling north  - are reeling this week at the news the Woodend Bypass will be tolled, potentially costing those who commute to Christchurch for work up to $1300 per year.

This is a road that was promised toll free. The Government needs to be truthful about why is suddenly has one.

NZTA has a funding crisis because of the Government’s choices, with a $6 billion hole by the end of the decade.

It’s another example of how much more Kiwis are paying because of National. The community should have been consulted and promises shouldn’t have been made that cannot be kept.

Sometimes tolls are necessary, but where was the community input?  Have your say by taking my poll.
