They loved the cameras then. Now the COVID Inquiry says, “Come and explain yourselves”? Silence.

Dear [Name],

This week says it all: Jacinda hides from accountability, Auckland water bosses chase race quotas instead of fixing pipes, we’ve scrapped one of the dumbest taxes, and ACT Local candidates are hitting the campaign trail.

So let's crack into it👇

Jacinda Ardern – The Great Disappearing Act

Remember the 1pm “Podium of Truth”? Jacinda Ardern, Chris Hipkins, Grant Robertson, Ayesha Verrall – standing there every day telling you if you could open your shop, visit your family, or send your kids to school. They loved the cameras then.

Now the COVID Inquiry says, “Come and explain yourselves”? Silence.

“Jacinda Ardern, Chris Hipkins, Grant Robertson, and Ayesha Verrall’s refusal to front up to the COVID inquiry is a big change from invading our living rooms daily. What’s changed?” – David Seymour

We’re talking about families separated at the border in their final moments, Auckland locked down more than 100 days longer than the rest of the country, RAT tests left to expire, MIQ still running when the virus was already here, surgeries cancelled, schools shut for months, and $66 billion spent against Treasury advice, driving inflation and a mortgage crunch.

That’s why ACT fought to make sure the Inquiry was a real investigation into the costs and damage – not a PR exercise. Tens of thousands of Kiwis have shared their stories, and we’ll keep the pressure on until they front up.

Watercare’s Wrong Priorities

Auckland needs homes, and homes need pipes. Watercare’s job couldn’t be clearer. Instead, they’re busy asking contractors about their ethnicity and gender before asking if they can do the job.

Since 2021 they’ve been chasing a 5% race quota for Māori-owned businesses. Tender forms now ask if you’re Māori-owned, Pasifika-owned, or woman-owned.

“Watercare cares more about your ethnic background than your ability to install infrastructure at a fair price.”Simon Court

While they’ve been ticking boxes, 60% of projects have run late. That’s $1–2 billion worth of missing infrastructure – meaning whole suburbs like Hibiscus Coast, Redhills, Papakura, and Ōtara will be stuck waiting another decade for water and wastewater capacity.

We’re calling time on this nonsense. ACT Local is standing candidates who will fight to get councils back to delivering the basics.

Cameron Luxton is making it easier for boaties

Boaties Off the Hook

If your boat doesn’t touch a road, why were you paying road tax? Farmers, tradies, and anyone running off-road gear have been paying it too. It’s been a rort for years.

We’re ending it.

“Fuel tax is supposed to fund roads. So why have boat owners been forced to pay it when their vehicles never touch a road?”Cameron Luxton

That’s 70c a litre in excise gone, plus 10c GST on top. This will mean $120 saved on a150-litre boat tank. More money for fuel and bait, less for Wellington.

It’s another example of ACT’s work in Government, scrapping unfair taxes and making sure Kiwis keep more of what they earn.

In the weeks to come, we’ll be showcasing some of the hard work our candidates are doing out on the campaign trail – Here's our candidate Davina Smolders for Bay of Islands-Whangaroa Ward

ACT Local Hits the Ground Running

It’s not just in Parliament where ACT’s making waves, it’s out in the suburbs too.

ACT Local has launched the largest local government campaign ever mounted by a political party in New Zealand: 46 practical, community-minded New Zealanders standing across 25 councils, bigger than Labour’s, bigger than the Greens’.

Hoardings are going up. Leaflets are hitting letterboxes. Whether it’s a market stall, a public meeting, or the sidelines of a sports game, you’ll see our candidates out there, listening to voters, and hearing first hand how they can advocate for you. They’re not hiding behind press releases or waiting for election day, they’re out there getting it done.

Our people come from all walks of life – business owners, tradies, healthcare workers, farmers, professionals, but they all share the same goal: sensible spending, equal rights, and a back-to-basics approach. They’re local residents and ratepayers who know the potholes, the broken pipes, the eye-watering rate hikes, and the red tape because they’ve dealt with it themselves.

Over the next few weeks, you’ll spot them in your community. Give them a wave. Have a chat. Tell them what’s on your mind. Every conversation, every leaflet, every hoarding builds the momentum we need to win in October, so when your voting papers arrive, back your ACT Local candidate and get your friends and neighbours to do the same.

Until Next Week

Labour and the Greens gave you lockdown chaos, identity politics, and pointless taxes. ACT’s cleaning it up – fixing broken systems, ending waste, and delivering results Kiwis can see.

If that’s your kind of politics, share our newsletter with a mate.

And if there’s an ACT Local candidate running in your area, get behind them. Our movement’s only just getting started.

👉 Say g'day at our next event

Thanks,

Team ACT
