** Update for August 28, 2025 ------------------------------------------------------------ ** National can’t make up its mind ------------------------------------------------------------ While Kiwis struggle to make ends meet, Chris Bishop and Christopher Luxon are contradicting each other on whether they want house prices to go up or down. Luxon told media he wanted to see growth, but back in June Bishop was clear that prices needed to come down. Flip-flopping around with house values is alarming to homeowners. They need to get on the same page. They don’t seem to have a clue about the economic mess they’ve created, or what things are like for ordinary New Zealanders. Calls for help are laughed off and dwindling business confidence is not recognised. National is out of touch and can’t make up its collective mind about housing. Ngā mihi Duncan ** Have your say on tolls ------------------------------------------------------------ More than 80 % of participants in my poll last week on Mailchimp and social media don’t support tolls for the new Woodend Bypass. National is pushing up the cost of living for commuters when it should be focused on making life easier for Kiwis. Tolls are sometimes necessary, but other communities are getting toll-free roads - why not the South Island? Have your say before September 9 using the link below. Have your say (https://nzta.govt.nz/projects/sh1-belfast-to-pegasus-motorway-and-woodend-bypass/tolling-consultation) ** Democracy 101 ------------------------------------------------------------ I’ve put together a series of short videos to help people understand how our democracy works - and why this Government’s actions are eroding our democracy. Episode two is on the Official Information Act. Everyone is welcome to come along for a chat and some kai - we’ll have a free sausage sizzle and staff on hand to help you with queries. All welcome - 11am-2pm. I’ll also be operating the barbecue at World Rivers Day (https://www.facebook.com/events/1469911394439805/) on Sunday September 28. Please join us to celebrate urban rivers. I’ll be available to chat with Christchurch residents from 11am to 1pm. ** Pay equity day of action ------------------------------------------------------------ A community march on Saturday, September 20 in Christchurch will honour Kate Sheppard’s fight for equal pay for equal work and continue the call for pay equity today. Everyone is welcome. Last week I published some quotes from women at the coal face - doing the mahi in jobs that are not valued and have had their chance for pay equity ripped away by this Government. I’ve been asked to clarify one quote - here it is in full below. “From a deaf perspective, our cultural and communication skills are very specialised. Our students have complex needs beyond deafness but some of our tutors and residential support staff can barely afford to come to work.” “NZSL is not valued as a specialist skill and you can’t just hire somebody off the street to do our jobs.” Deaf tutor and residential support worker Join the day of action (https://www.together.org.nz/christchurch_wdoa) ** For your diary ------------------------------------------------------------ * Christchurch says no to privatisation (https://www.facebook.com/events/2081320945728215/) * Zero Waste Birch Tapping Workshop (https://www.facebook.com/events/1570401933920162/) * Word Christchurch (https://ccc.govt.nz/news-and-events/whats-on/programme/134) * Dame Anne Salmond: Knowledge is a blessing (https://ccc.govt.nz/news-and-events/whats-on/event/dame-anne-salmond-knowledge-is-a-blessing) ** Connect with me ------------------------------------------------------------ Follow me on social to keep in touch with our events and more. https://facebook.com/ https://instagram.com/ https://x.com/ https://tiktok.com/ https://linkedin.com/ View in browser (https://mailchi.mp/7f8c6d49a014/the-budget-that-leaves-women-out-13890615) Copyright (C) 2025 Duncan Webb, MP for Christchurch Central.
