Update for October 8, 2025

Last chance to have your say

Your local council has a huge impact on your day-to-day life in ways that are often not appreciated. Every morning when you turn on a tap or drive on a road, you’re benefitting from the rates you pay.

Voting is not a chore; it’s a privilege and a duty. It keeps the people making the big decisions accountable to you.

So please vote in the local body elections. If you’re not enrolled, you can still enrol by this Friday, October 10.  Enrol or update online here.

It’s too late to post your but don’t worry, there are lots of big orange bins where you can drop your voting papers off - find one here.

If you don’t receive your voting papers it is easy to cast a special vote - visit the council’s reception on Hereford St and the staff will help you.

Voting closes at midday on Saturday October 11.

A dignified life for our seniors

Last week I attended the launch of Doors to Dignity, a nationwide campaign led by the Christchurch Methodist Mission advocating for safe, warm and affordable housing for older New Zealanders.

A photographic exhibition by David Cook and featuring senior social housing residents is on at Aldersgate until tomorrow - don’t miss it!

The campaign is pushing for real change as many Kiwis, including lots of older people, are being left behind in the current housing crisis.

CMM is also petitioning Parliament to increase investment in social and affordable housing.

As this Government cans planned state house builds, it’s not just creating a crisis for low income and older Kiwis who cannot afford even the cheapest private rentals on a single benefit or superannuation, it’s also creating a crisis in the construction industry, with 20,000 jobs lost.

Sign the petition below to urge the Government to think again and invest in social and affordable housing for older Kiwis. They deserve a dignified life in their senior years.
