** Update for November 20, 2025 ------------------------------------------------------------ ** Health failures laid bare ------------------------------------------------------------ Last week I hosted Health spokesperson Ayesha Verrall in Christchurch to talk about our plan for affordable healthcare. This week, the New Zealand Health Survey has laid bare Luxon’s failures (https://www.labour.org.nz/news/release-luxons-health-failures-laid-bare/) in providing Kiwis with healthcare. Nearly 650,000 people can’t afford to see their GP. People are going without basic care for their issues. We know that if people can access care early it takes pressure off emergency departments later on. Our plan is to give every New Zealander three free doctor visits per year, so people can get help when they need it and avoid hospital and reduce pressure on the health system. ** Smokefree progress flatlined ------------------------------------------------------------ The NZ Health Survey also showed progress towards a Smokefree New Zealand has ground to a halt. Smoking has increased among Māori, disabled and Asian communities and 7000 more people now smoke more than a pack a day compared to last year. One of the first things this Government did was scrap our world-leading smokefree legislation. It’s hurting our communities and Luxon has no plan to turn this around. We’ve tumbled from second to 53rd (https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/political/578576/most-deteriorated-nz-plummets-in-global-tobacco-control-ranking) in the Global Tobacco Industry Interference Index. As Ayesha has said, it’s pretty clear that giving a $300m tax break to tobacco companies does nothing to help Kiwis quite smoking or protect our health. The new date for our meeting with Labour’s Immigration spokesperson Phil Twyford is next Tuesday. We’ve got a new venue with loads more capacity, after the last one was booked out.
