When Labour was in charge of the country’s chequebook, Kainga Ora was a financial basket case. Debt was due to peak at a massive $29 billion and there was a sea of red ink. Thanks to cost savings, financial discipline and tough decisions, debt is now forecast to peak at $19.5 billion. That’s down nearly $10 billion. Turning around Kainga Ora is part of our plan to fix the basics and build the future by getting the country’s books in order after Labour’s reckless spending and record borrowing. Under National, build costs are down, the waitlist for social housing is down, tenants are happier and safer, antisocial tenants face real consequences AND we built thousands of new houses. History shows we can’t afford a Labour, Greens, Te Pati Māori government that will spend more, borrow more and tax you more – while running organisations like Kainga Ora into the ground.
