"I oppose the bill in its current form... "I have served on many councils with different configurations over the past 20 plus years. Only one (since 2022) has had Māori constituency representatives. Our Council is richer for this and the perspectives these councillors bring is invaluable to our decision making. The decision to introduce Māori constituencies was a sound one based on local knowledge and (like every single one of the decisions we make) did not require a a binding referendum to enable it to occur. Local Councils make local decisions everyday and we are capable of continuing this process without further legislative interference from Central government that in my opinion is at best discriminatory and more likely racist."
